Pale Rumors

People say the darnedest things. Rumors circulate like flies on rotting meat. Most are hogwash, but may be vaguely based in fact. Others are facts wrapped in falsehoods. Below are a sample of many of the rumors currently circulating through out the Theocracy, heard in the dark corners of most taverns and inns. Whether they are to be believed or not is purely up to those that hear them.

  • There was a closed meeting of the Council of Nine today. I'm not sure what happened, but almost everyone in attendance left in a very sour and somber mood. The Theocrat even retired to his private chambers afterwards instead of addressing the Basilica. It know what was stranger...Zacktinerim wasn't seen leaving the chambers...
  • It's all over the Basilica. Jarret Beak has gone missing. They are trying to keep it quiet, so I don't know if his enemies finally got to him, he finally decided to embrace the teachings of the Whispered One, or something even more nefarious.
  • It use to be safe to travel in the Pale, but recently, banditry has been noticed on some of the out-of-the-way roads, especially in the South. It's probably Nyronders displaced from the war, or some dirty flan that haven't realized they can go home.
  • There is a rebellion brewing. The church is trying to keep a lid on things, but it won't be long before there is fighting in the streets.
  • Faithful Flan have been disappearing in the night all over the north. Any attempt to divine their location has failed.
  • Sental Tekis, Prelate of Ogburg, is secretly seeking the opinion of the other prelates, as well as the Celestial General of the Army, as to whether or not the Theocrat should be removed for his Sins against Pholtus (Self Will) and the Pale which resulted in several years of an unnatural Troll Winter and the wrath of Winterwind.
  • Many in the priesthood have been trying to strengthen the laws of the Pale, making previously minor crimes more severe. Better watch your step.
  • After the death of Winterwind, there is a power vacuum in the Rakers and troll fens. Several of his remaining generals, as well as other powerful entities, have started a sort of "conquest of evil" between all the denizens of the area, attempting to unite them under their banner.
  • The Theocrat is really a doppleganger, replaced on his way to fighting the ghost dragon Xianshe before he became the Theocrat. He had escorts at the time, but they were distracted with large feral beasts.
  • The Theocrat is believed to be contemplating an edict that will admit that there are in fact other, independent gods than Pholtus, but that Pholtus is the supreme deity and that the One True Path is the correct one. This rumor adds fuel to the rumor that there are those seeking his removal from office.
  • The Theocrat is writing a Treaty with those Blasphemers from Dimre. What?s next, inviting Old Wicked to mass?
